He held the newly printed photograph of the couple in the van on the butcher block.

“I’m a little tired of photos, dearest. Can’t we do something together for a change? After all, we missed our chance in that little rainstorm last week.”

He whistled for a moment while he sized the picture for inclusion in its volume.

“Remember when you were stranded in the parking lot in that nasty rain? I could’ve given you a ride then. Of course, it would’ve been to the beach and not the tire store. And when your sister took you to lunch. Nice girls don’t eat donuts, my dearest.”

He waited for a response from the picture. Getting none, he moved on to starting his task. With his knife tip, he sliced along the scar on the man’s face in the photo. Dissatisfied, he banged his fist into the butcher block.

“But I’m getting very tired of all these boyfriends!”

He raised his fist over his head, the knife clenched tightly inside, and brought it down square in the center of the man’s face in the photo.

Wrenching the knife out of the cutting block, he sliced the picture in half with one quick slash, eliminating the man’s image. Keeping only the woman at the driver’s wheel, he glued that to the next page in the scrapbook.

After putting the volume away in its proper place on the shelf, he went to the bathroom for his shower.
